Non-Sterile Compounding

What is compounding?

Pharmacy compounding is the preparation of prescription medications to meet the specific needs of an individual patient. This may include combining active ingredients into one dose, tailoring the ingredients to avoid allergic reactions, or making the medication in a different form for ease of use, for example, liquid medications for a patient who struggles to swallow pills.

The one-size-fits-all approach, presented with mass produced medications, does not actually meet the needs of all patients, so compounding pharmacists work closely with prescribing physicians to tailor medications to meet the specific needs of an individual.

What is non-sterile compounding?

Non-sterile medications include:
  • Solutions
  • Suspensions
  • Ointments
  • Creams
  • Powders
  • Suppositories
  • Capsules
  • Tablets
