Prevalence of Brain Disease in Georgia

Dementia, brain diseases and disorders are a significant concern in the aging population, as the risk of developing these conditions increases with age.

“Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning — thinking, remembering, and reasoning — to such an extent that it interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. “

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. As the most common form of dementia, Alzheimer’s poses a significant challenge for individuals and their loved ones. In 2020, as many as 5.8 million people in America were living with this disease.

According to the Georgia Department of Health:

“Over 130,000 Georgians of all ages are estimated to have Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia (ADRD). With the increasing Georgia aging population, this number is expected to increase to about 190,000 in the next decade – an increase of about 46%.”

Age-related cognitive decline and mild cognitive impairment are widespread issues that impact a substantial portion of older adults. These statistics emphasize the growing burden of brain diseases in the aging population, highlighting the need for increased research, support, and healthcare resources to address this pressing public health challenge.

Morgan Compounding Nasal Spray
NAD+ Nasal Spray

Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+) is an essential coenzyme in all living cells. It is crucial in energy metabolism and proper cell function, particularly within mitochondria. NAD+ is naturally produced in the body from the amino acid tryptophan or vitamin B3. It is continuously recycled within cells, converting between its reduced form (NADH) and phosphorylated forms (NADP and NADPH).

NAD+ levels are highest in newborns and gradually decline with age. This decline in NAD+ levels, along with decreased mitochondrial function and oxidative damage, is a proposed aging mechanism. Research suggests that the age-related decrease in NAD+ levels may be influenced by an enzyme that breaks down NAD+ and its precursor. Additionally, inflammation and oxidative stress have been linked to reduced NAD+ biosynthesis.

Low levels of NAD+ have been associated with various conditions related to free radical damage, including diabetes, heart disease, vascular dysfunction, ischemic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, and vision loss.
